history of the Toll House Bookshop

Elaine started bookselling in 1977 when she returned with her husband Christopher to their beloved Yorkshire. In 1981 she bought the old toll house in the picturesque market town of Holmfirth.

Initially she sold second hand and antiquarian books from two rooms in the historic old building. Over the years Elaine added full price and discounted new books and gradually renovated more rooms.

The shop now has eight rooms of books catering for all tastes and budgets, with approximatly 30,000 volumes on display and many more in reserve.

Book lovers from all over the country come to visit, usually combining a trip to the Toll House, with a visit to the stunning surrounding 'Summer Wine' country.

As a general bookseller Elaine has rare and collectable books on a wide range of subject. She has however a particular fondness for fine bindings and many examples are available for customers to view.
